What is the Difference Between a Mattress Foundation and a Box Spring?

A mattress foundation is a wooden frame that supports the mattress. 

A box spring is a wooden frame with a layer of steel coils inside that supports the mattress.

Foundations are replacing box springs these days as they are firmer and provide a sturdier base for memory foam mattresses.
